Yale’s updated design standards for capital projects are now available to project teams. These new and/or revised standards assist design architects and engineers in maintaining consistency on a particular project and continuity with existing university facilities, systems, and equipment.
Division 01: General Requirements
- 01 35 63 Requirements for Sustainable Design: Yale adopts LEED v5 requirements and strengthens its commitment to sustainable practices in the design and construction of all project sizes on campus.
All capital projects are now being assigned a project sustainability scope category at the formulation phase. The categories include [1] Advanced, pursuing LEED v5 Gold certification; [2] Certified, pursuing LEED v5 basic certification; [3] Tracked, not pursuing certification, but documenting key sustainability features in the project Basis of Design using LEED frameworks.
Additional updates include guidance on sustainability meetings, documentation, and project requirements and two new guidance tools are available: appendices A and B.
- Appendix A: Sustainable Design Requirements by Project Scope provides scope requirements for each LEED prerequisite and credit by project sustainability scope category. Requirements align with LEED v5, current best practices, code updates, and were tailored to each of the three project scopes.
- Appendix B: Project Priority Credits describes Yale’s preferred pathway for all advanced and certified projects to achieve ten points through a combination of regional priority, project-type credits, exemplary performance, and pilot credits.
- 01 45 10 Contractor Quality Control, Small Projects: This new standard for small projects eliminates the requirement for a full-time quality control manager and provides scalable requirements for Definable Features of Work.
- 01 50 00 Temporary Facilities and Controls: This revised standard includes requirements for temporary utilities, support facilities, and protections for existing facilities, environment, security, moisture, and mold. There are details for the design of temporary fencing, field offices, safety equipment, and HVAC equipment and guidance on use charges, informational submittals, quality assurance, and project conditions. References are made to the new standard 01 58 00 Temporary Construction Signage.
- 01 58 00 Temporary Construction Signage: This new standard includes requirements for project identification signage, mounting methods, and applicability. Applicable projects require an identification sign that describes the project and provides a communication pathway. The standard also includes a menu of public-facing construction signs that align with Yale’s graphic identity.
Division 09: Finishes
- 09 68 00 Carpet: This revised standard defines new performance and sustainability criteria grounded in discussions with Facilities Operations and manufacturers. It now differentiates between requirements for broadloom and modular carpet products. Changes also include more robust installation requirements and greater guidance on carpet type by location.
